Parrots Ferry Bridge
The Parrots Ferry Bridge spans the northern end of New Melones Lake on the Stanislaus River and is one of the tallest of its kind in the country. Plunked down between Vallecito and Columbia, it’s certainly a beautiful site and makes for a fantastic turn-around point for you cyclists.
Sutter Gold Mine
Sutter Gold Mine is a modern hard rock mine originally developed for gold extraction in the late 1980s, the mine is now open exclusively for one hour underground tours deep into the heart of the Motherlode offering a comprehensive look into the gold mining process and its historical progression.
Saddle Creek Golf Resort
This 18-Hole championship course offers a scenic and challenging course. Stretching just over 6,800 yards from the black tees, the championship tees have a slope rating of 137. The mens’ tees measure 6,044 yards with a gentle slope rating of 122 and the ladies’ tees measure 4,486 yards with a slope rating of 117.
The Spice Tin
Downtown Murphys is known for its eclectic shops and restaurants. A prime example would be The Spice Tin. While it does offer an incredible array of fine spices (nearly 200 to choose from), The Spice Tin also offers a wide-range of culinary gift-ware, locally made mustards, dressings and sauces, fine art and world treasures — including European and Asian furniture pieces, pottery, pieces from local artists and music.
Cioppino Feed at Murphys Historic Hotel
It’s that time again! Murphys Historic Hotel is offering its Cioppino Feed the last Friday of every month and they’re serving up an all-you-can-eat cioppino feast: bowls of rich tomato broth filled with fresh seafood and light Italian spices, served with fresh green salad and baskets of garlic bread.
Melting Moments: Toasted Cheese Class at Marisolio Tasting Bar
Local cheese connoisseur, Judy Creighton, will be on hand at Marisolio Tasting Bar tomorrow for a presentation to drool for as she discusses the fine practice of melting cheeses, whips up a few recipes and, of course, shares the dishes with the lucky attendees. Paired with some of Marisolio’s incredible olive oils, the ante is upped in a win-win match between budding chefs and their tasty creations.
Querencia
Querencia, in Spanish, means the place where one feels secure — a home, a place one can nest or center or rejuvenate. With its 40 ridge-top acres, walk paths, gardens, grapevines and jaw-dropping views, Querencia offers four luxury rooms featuring fireplaces, private patios/balconies, and showers EIGHT FEET in diameter, the bed-and-breakfast proves to be just that: a place to nest, center and rejuvenate.
Sierra Nevada Logging Company
Keeping the history of the logging industry in the Sierra Nevada region alive, the museum conveys the history of the logging and lumbering industry as it evolved in the Sierra Nevada region since the mid 1800s before the discovery of gold to the present day.
V Bistro & Bar
Popular with both locals and visitors to the area, V is lauded as one of the best restaurants in the Calavares County, and has just welcomed a new chef, Marshall Bishop, who’s previous kitchens have included Farallon, Masa’s, Gary Danko and Acqua. And now, V Bistro and Bar has just opened next to the restaurant — a European style bar and eatery where folks can gather for good food, good drink and good company.
Haley Verzani Fundraiser
Murphys and Calaveras are known for their love of community, and this weekend is a truly wonderful example of this sincere commitment to the family built by community. This Saturday, the community is coming together to not only remember little Haley Verzani — killed last month during a severe winter storm — but to help get the Verzani family back on their feet after the terrible loss of their daughter, their home and their belongings. An evening of food and incredible music by local favorites will be on hand, and all those participating are donating their time and services for the event.
Wine, Dine and Watch Wild & Scenic Films at Newsome-Harlow
Newsome Harlow has quite the soiree planned for tomorrow night as they invite folks to their Wine, Dine and Watch Wild & Scenic Films night! Their award-winning wines will be available for tasting, Chef Andy will be showcasing some incredible Thai dishes she learned while exploring Thailand last summer, and two films — “Ice” and “Someplace With a Mountain” will be screened as part of the SYRCL Wild & Scenic Film Festival, with a discussion to follow.
The Historic Murphys Hotel
Whether you’re staying at the hotel for a night, nibbling on bread pudding (with whiskey sauce!) or downing a pint after giving the grilled alligator a try in the saloon, it’s truly an experience unique to Murphys. History, food, wine, company and community — it’s what Murphys does best.
California Cavern
Folks have been visiting California Cavern (folks such as Mark Twain and John Muir) for over one hundred fifty years, spelunking the caves below the Sierra Foothills and marveling at the cavern’s crystalline formations. There are four tours offered — two walking tours and two spelunking tours — each of which offers an incredible and unique look at what lies below the Sierra Foothills.
Bodega del Sur Winery: One Wine-Lovin’ Family
Evelyn and Victor Reyes-Umana run a shining example of the family winery. The Bodega del Sur Winery, with a tasting room located in downtown Murphys, is on a mission to make every visitor a member of its extended family by offering impeccable service and truly rich wine offerings created from locally grown Spanish varietals.
The Red Apple Bakery and Fruit Stand
So let’s talk a little bit about the history of Red Apple Ranch. The ranch has been the historic homestead of the Darby family for over 100 years and is home to one of the state’s oldest roadside apple stands, The Red Apple Bakery and Fruit Stand, offering an incredible assortment of fresh produce and other locally produced goods in addition to their legendary baked goods and pastries. Apple doughnuts, anyone?
Lake Alpine
Lake Alpine — which sits majestically in the southwest corner of Alpine County — is a year-round destination in the Sierras, just 33 miles from Red Apple Ranch. In the wintertime, Lake Alpine is teaming with activity, particularly for those who enjoy cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In the summer, folks can enjoy fishing for trout, kayaking, power boating and hiking.
Biking Your Way Through Murphys, Calaveras and the Sierra Foothills
Now that Spring has sprung, the itch to get out and take in the scenery should be downright impossible to ignore. Dust off your bike helmet, put some air in those tires and scoot on out for a day trip to Mosquito Lake, Parrots Ferry Bridge, Bear Valley or even to Greenhorn Creek where you can spend the weekend golfing before hopping back on and riding back to Murphys.
Columbia State Historic Park
Columbia State Historic Park is a fully and faithfully restored old-town Columbia — a Gold Rush era time capsule offering parades, town tours, music festivals and historic reenactments. It’s a chance to see how places like Columbia and Murphys came to be and a unique chance to understand the history of the area first-hand.
Grounds and Firewood Restaurants
Grounds and Firewood are sister restaurants in the heart of historic downtown Murphys.
